Wondering how to build a media wall? A media wall is more than just a place to hang your TV — it’s a stylish focal point that can transform any living space. By incorporating a television, electric fireplace, and built-in storage or shelving, you can combine comfort, function, and contemporary design. Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or planning to hire a contractor, building a media wall is a smart upgrade for any modern home.

    What Is a Media Wall?

A media wall is a custom-built feature that typically houses a flat-screen TV and an electric fireplace, along with optional shelves, cabinets, or ambient lighting. It gives your room a sleek, integrated look and hides all the wires and clutter that often come with electronics.

    Materials & Tools You’ll Need

    Materials

    • Timber (e.g. 75mm x 50mm or 100mm x 50mm) for framing
    • MDF or plasterboard for cladding
    • Wood screws and drywall screws
    • Electric fireplace unit
    • TV wall mount
    • Cable management kit (conduit or trunking)
    • Joint compound and filler
    • Primer and paint
    • Optional: LED lights, shiplap, or decorative trims

    Tools

    • Tape measure
    • Spirit level
    • Saw (circular or mitre)
    • Power drill and screwdriver
    • Stud finder
    • Jigsaw (for cut-outs)
    • Sandpaper or sander
    • Paintbrushes or rollers

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Media Wall

    1. Plan Your Design

Start by sketching your desired layout. Decide:

    • Where the TV and fireplace will go
    • How high the TV should be (eye-level from your couch is best)
    • Whether you want shelves or cabinets
    • The overall width and height of the structure

Tip: Have your TV and fireplace on hand to measure the exact dimensions.

    2. Frame the Structure

Use timber to build the internal skeleton of your media wall.

    • Mark out the width and height on the wall and floor
    • Secure the base and top timber plates to the floor and ceiling
    • Install vertical studs (400mm apart is typical)
    • Add horizontal supports (noggings) where your TV mount and fireplace will be fixed

This frame will carry the weight of your TV and fireplace, so make sure it’s sturdy and square.

    3. Cut Out Openings

Mark and build internal frames for your:

    • TV
    • Electric fireplace

Make sure the openings are slightly larger than the units for ventilation and fitting.

    4. Install Cabling and Electricals

Before cladding, run all necessary wires:

    • Power sockets for TV and fireplace
    • HDMI cables
    • Speaker wires or LED lighting if desired

Use a conduit or cable trunking to keep it neat and hidden.

Important: If you’re unsure about electrical work, hire a certified electrician.

    5. Clad the Frame

Cover the entire frame with MDF sheets or plasterboard.

    • Use a jigsaw to carefully cut out openings for the TV and fireplace
    • Screw the cladding securely into the studs
    • Fill gaps and screw holes with joint compound
    • Sand the surface smooth

    6. Install Fireplace and TV

    • Fit the electric fireplace into its cavity (follow manufacturer instructions)
    • Mount the TV bracket to the frame and hang your TV

    7. Add Finishing Touches

Now it’s time to make it pop:

    • Paint the entire structure or add wallpaper
    • Install LED strip lights for ambient glow
    • Add trims, shiplap, or decorative panels for a custom finish
    • Style with floating shelves or built-ins

    Pro Tips

    • Keep at least 15-30cm depth for housing fireplace and TV cables
    • Use fire-rated plasterboard for added safety around the fireplace
    • Leave access points in case you need to adjust wiring later
    • Use a spirit level frequently for accuracy

Final Thoughts: how to build a media wall

Building a media wall is a rewarding project that elevates your living room both visually and functionally. With careful planning, the right tools, and attention to detail, you can create a space where entertainment meets elegance.

Whether you’re going minimalist or adding dramatic lighting and finishes, your media wall will no doubt become the heart of your home.
